Tips to clean your home after holi

Holi is one of the most fun and cheerful Indian festivals, with its bright colors and gleeful celebrations. As much excitement and joy that the festival brings, it also leaves your home a mess after the festivities have wound down. But before you start panicking and try to cover all your furniture in protective wrap, read on to find easy ways to clean up your home.

Safeguard your Floor\Tiles

Color marks and stains on tiles, floors can be scrubbed clean with soap soaked brush. But do no scrub too vigorously or scratches will be left behind.

If there is a pool of water on the floor, then soak the stain immediately with paper tissue and then sprinkle some deter-gent over it.

Clean the color stained floors with a paste of baking powder and water. Allow the paste to rest over the stain mark for few minutes and then wash it with water.

Pamper your Wooden Furniture

Getting colors off wooden furniture can be difficult. If dry colors fall in your furniture simply dusting it off should be enough, but if the color is mixed with water then the likelihood of it staining it. To remove the stain, wet a small cotton ball in acetone and use to to remove the stain. This may remove the varnish off some delicate furniture so be gentle when you are cleaning.

Protect your Covers

Powdered color can be dusted off. Do not apply pressure while removing the powder color (Gulal) while removing the powder as it could cause further staining. If it's your sofa covers, curtains or cushions, its advisable to soak them immediately in a bucket of soapy water. You can also use a cotton ball to soak the stain first with vinegar or lemon juice.

Shield your Bathrooms

The bathroom is the worst hit after Holi celebrations. Use liquid bleach to remove stains from white floors; do not use it on colored or laminated floors as the bleach may damage the natural floor color. Gently scrub bathroom fittings with liquid detergent or any available glass cleaner.

If it's Gulaal, just dust it off. Removing color stains from your walls can be a tricky task. One of the simplest and most effective wall cleaners is a paste made from baking soda and water. Place the paste on the cleaning cloth and rub on the stain until it lifts. Do not rub vigorously or else you will end up leaving a permanent stain.
